Geneva ‘08 Preview: Lamborghini Gallardo LP550 to debut with new face, more power

The current Gallardo (above) will get a new look in Geneva

Inside Line reports that Lamborghini will unveil an updated Gallardo at Geneva, and that, like its big, bad MFer of a brother, the Murcielago LP640, the “baby” Lambo will get an addition to its proper name. The Gallardo LP550, as it’s expected to be called, will now deliver 550 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque from its 5.2L ten-cylinder (up from 5.0L). Fully restyled front and rear fascias will reportedly adorn Sant’Agata’s latest monument to hauling ass, too. Under that new skin sits a stiffer architecture, a lighter all-wheel-drive system, and updated versions of the car’s manual and sequential gearboxes. Naturally, all this will come at a price, so look for the Gallardo’s $180,000 sticker to rise accordingly. We don’t foresee Lambo shoppers letting that stop them from pulling out the ‘ol checkbook, and we’ll be on hand in Geneva to see the newest bull enter the ring. Thanks for the tip, Mike!

Spy Shots: Lamborghini LP550 gets ready for its debut

Last week, Inside Line reported that Lamborghini would use the Geneva Motor Show to unveil a facelifted, juiced-up Gallardo that would take a new name: LP550. Now, Brenda Priddy’s spies have caught the updated Lambo covered head-to-toe in black tape. That’s OK, though, because the car’s updated details remain visible, and you can now get an idea of what’s in store for Geneva. In front, the two primary intakes retain their shape, but the front air dam itself is now much deeper and more pronounced, with a pair of new struts hanging down and framing what appears to be a third, central intake below the front bumper. New vents also adorn the leading edges of the front wheel wells. Out back, a new rear fascia incorporates reshaped (thinner) grillework for engine heat dissipation, as well as rehaped openings for the exhausts, which now use double-barreled tips. As Inside Line originally reported, the car’s V10 grows to displace 5.2 liters and dishes out 550 horsepower. According to Priddy’s shooter, it’s also very quiet at idle. Don’t worry, though — the photographer also reports that it makes all the right noises under power. We’ll be there when the big reveal happens in Geneva. In the meantime, you can compare the spy pics to shots of the current Gallardo to see the differences.

Geneva ‘08 Preview: Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 caught hanging out

Though the 2008 Geneva Motor Show doesn’t officially start until tomorrow, the show floor is open and it’s amazing what you can find just parked out in the open. Some Geneva show-goers, for instance, have already caught the Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 uncovered at Lamborghini’s display. While we won’t have any official info from the Raging Bull until tomorrow, reports speculate that the car’s name is derived from its new 5.2L direct-inject V10 producing 560 PS (552 hp), and its four-wheel-drive system. The new engine, expected to become the Gallardo’s sole motor eventually, is reportedly derived from the same V10 in the Audi RS6 Avant. The new LP560-4 is also said to be lighter than a standard Gallardo by some 20kg (44 lbs.), and features some important styling tweaks to the now five-year-old coupe.

While the exterior upgrades are minimal, once spotted they jump out at you. Up front are what appear to be new headlights, as well as a third intake or inlet that possibly directs air underneath the car. Positioned front, center and low between the two larger intakes, the new inlet adds some angles to the front end that are very reminiscent of the angular Reventon. Lamborghini has also added new vertical intakes ahead of the front wheels, though otherwise the profile remains the same except for new (and gorgeous) wheels. The largest exterior alteration is the rear end, which has been totally redone. The taillights are wider and shorter, a black grille stretches the entire expanse of the rear, and a pair of dual exhausts now exit within a black housing above a purposeful looking rear diffuser.

We’ll have our own pics early tomorrow, but until then click the source to see a few more from the show floor. Thanks for the tip, Mike!

We just detailed the changes made to the Lamborghini Gallardo as it evolves into the spectacular LP560-4. And while the name might not be exciting, the car sure is. New front and rear fascias, as detailed here, give the “baby” Lambo a menacing new look that’s backed up by an upgraded 5.2L V10 that reportedly dishes out 560 PS/ 552 HP while tipping the scales at 44 lbs. less than the Gallardo. That’s what fast is made of. We’ll update the photo gallery (more pics coming as we type) and post the official specs as soon as they’re released.

Geneva 2008: Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 live and drool-worthy

Click above for a high-res gallery of the Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4.

After circumnavigating the whole of the Geneva expo center, a strange force drew us to a minimalistic booth on the west side of the complex. There, we were afforded our first live glimpse of Lamborghini’s newest exotica, the Gallardo LP560-4. As its name implies, the gussied-up Gallardo is sporting 560 hp from its new, direct-injected 5.2-liter V10. Hacking off 20 kilos from the curb weight allows the LP560-4 to rocket to 62 mph in 3.7 seconds and on to a top speed of 201 mph, all the while increasing fuel efficiency and reducing CO2 emissions by some 18-percent.

All the official details are available after the jump and we’ve assembled a high-res gallery of live and press images below.
